The G2 East Maitland Bowling Club Gold Cup trophy will remain in the Hunter Valley this year, after Dungog-based chaser, Nangar Jim, claimed victory from box eight, delivering trainer Joseph Mcfadyen his first group race glory.
Starting as the favoured runner with punters over the 450m journey, while he didn’t step as brilliantly as his runner-up performance in the heat a week prior, the son of Aston Dee Bee and Nangar Silk hit the accelerator and quickly took control around the turn. The fawn flash, who weighs in at just 30.6kg careered away to score by 4.25 lengths, in a blistering time of 24.77. Peter Lagogiane’s Nad Al Sheba ran a gallant race to finish second, with War Hawk for Penny Hutchison a further 0.25 lengths away in third.
Nangar Jim has now won 12 of his 20 career outings, including 6 runner-up placings, amassing healthy earnings of over $86,000 thus far.
The first group one for both greyhound and his trainer could certainly be on the horizon, with a tilt at the G1 National Derby Series at Wentworth Park in January seemingly on the cards, after clocking a slick personal best of 29.76 over the 520m in recent outings.
