NSW GBOTA Secures One-Month Extension to Pursue Canberra Participant Solution
The NSW Greyhound Breeders, Owners and Trainers Association (NSW GBOTA) is pleased to announce that, following ongoing discussions with the Greyhound Welfare & Integrity Commission (GWIC), a one-month extension has been granted to allow the Association to continue implementing a potential solution for Canberra-based participants affected by recent jurisdictional issues.
Since becoming aware of the situation, whereby participants residing in the ACT will be unable to keep racing greyhounds due to jurisdictional requirements, the NSW GBOTA has been working tirelessly behind the scenes to identify a practical and sustainable pathway forward.
The extension provides the Association with valuable time to progress what it believes may be a viable solution that could allow Canberra participants to continue their involvement in the sport while ensuring all regulatory requirements are met.
NSW GBOTA Chairman Geoff Rose said the coming month would be critical.
“It’s going to be tight, but we’re committed to doing everything we can to assist the participants in Canberra,” Mr Rose said.
“The important thing is that we’re trying. You can never knock someone who tries, and if you don’t try, you’ll always be left wondering ‘what if?'”
“We don’t want to offer false hope to the participants in Canberra, but we do want them to know that we are actively working on a solution. Supporting participants is exactly why the NSW GBOTA exists to advocate for our industry and ensure greyhound racing continues to grow and prosper.”
Mr Rose said that finding a solution would not only benefit Canberra participants but would also provide ongoing support to the broader NSW racing industry.
“Many Canberra participants race primarily at Goulburn. By helping them remain active in the industry, we’re also supporting the Goulburn Greyhound Racing Club by maintaining nomination numbers and strengthening participation within New South Wales.”
The NSW GBOTA thanked GWIC for its willingness to engage in constructive discussions and for recognising the importance of exploring practical outcomes for participants.
“We sincerely thank GWIC for communicating openly with us and for granting this extension,” Mr Rose said.
“Their willingness to work collaboratively has provided hope that pragmatic solutions can be found which benefit participants while maintaining the integrity of the sport. We remain optimistic and will continue working diligently over the coming weeks to give this proposal every opportunity to succeed.”
The NSW GBOTA will provide a further update once discussions have concluded and the outcome of the proposal is wider known.
