NSW GBOTA Calls Out Newcastle Greens’ Attention Seeking and Land Grab Agenda
The NSW Greyhound Breeders, Owners and Trainers Association (NSW GBOTA), on behalf of our members, is disappointed by the approach taken by Greens councillors in Newcastle this week. A discussion that held no place with a local council which was overshadowed by political theatre that achieved nothing for the local community.
Statements made in the chamber suggesting that the NSW greyhound industry should be “transitioned” out of existence are both premature and unfounded. The greyhound industry is a legal, state regulated sector contributing over $610 million annually to the NSW economy, while supporting thousands of families and communities across the state. For a local council to speculate on its future is misleading and outside its remit.
Of particular concern was the discussion regarding industry owned land at The Gardens. Suggestions that such assets could simply be handed over to Council/public use misrepresent both the legal and practical realities. This is a blatant attack on legitimate property rights within the state.
It should also be noted that the only motion passed was a conditional one: that “If” the industry were ever to close, the Council would look at a plan at that time. This is far from the decisive outcome some sought to portray in news outlets and once again was designed to be miss leading.
The NSW GBOTA wishes to make its position clear:
– Our industry remains strong, viable, and committed to the future.
– Our members, their families, and the communities they support deserve respect, not to be used as props in political point scoring.
– Any attempt to misrepresent or undermine the industry will be challenged.
Greyhound racing continues to play a vital role in NSW. While some may choose to play politics, our members remain focused on reality supporting livelihoods, investing in communities, and ensuring a responsible and sustainable future for the sport.
