The running of the 2023 G2 East Maitland Bowling Club Gold Cup Final went down to the wire, with Ruth Matic’s Len Me Dad out dipping local hope Vamoose for Sue Smith in great go to the line, in front of a large crowd at the Maitland showground circuit.
Exiting from box one, Vamoose was the pre-race favourite after his brilliant heat win in 24.96 the week prior. Stepping cleaning as expected, the son of Fernando Bale and Blue Thunda took control in the early stages, with eventual winner Len Me Dad (Fernando Bale x Winxette) hot on his heels as they swept around the large Maitland bend. Turning for home Ruth Matic’s chaser took advantage of a rails run and clung on to win by a quarter of a length at the finish in a sizzling time of 24.94. Vamoose lost no admirers with a gutsy effort to finish second, clocking 24.96, with Queensland finalist Coonamble Kid producing a brilliant effort to place third for Chris Brydon. Winning owner Cheryl Barwick, along with the Matic family took home $40,000 in prizemoney, etching his name onto a very prestigious honour roll over previous winners.
